On a 100 mil (2.54 mm) grid the reason to choose it is not density but penetration and self-centring: the point breaks surface film on a bare via or plated hole and drops into it rather than skating to the rim, which is what you want when the test target is a via rather than a dedicated pad. At 0.9 mm it is the standard needle for this series. Be aware it will leave a witness mark on a soft pad; for finished surfaces the 05 bullet nose is the better tip.
